Chemicals in Plastics: Emasculating Our Boys

The established American habit of drinking water or soda from plastic bottles is also one of the causes of a tendency of many boys and young men to lose their drive and fail to grow up. Leonard Sax, MD, PhD, says the synthetic estrogens found in plastics additives has been emasculating our boys and pushing our girls into precocious puberty.

Five factors contribute to the increasing numbers of underachieving boys and men, according to Sax. One of these is the fact that boys and men are receiving synthetic estrogens as contaminants provided by plastic water and soda bottles, baby bottles, baby toys, and pacifiers. Sax identifies water and soda bottles with a recycling number of 1 as the most prevalent culprits. These items contain BPA and phthalates, synthetic estrogens for softening the plastic.

Scientists are aware that BPA and phthalates are environmental estrogens. But they don’t agree on how much is a harmful dose. The industry conducted animal studies looking for cancer. Acceptable limits are based on the dose causing cancer in those animal studies.

But Sax brings up another point: what is the effect on a male, taking estrogen? Bottled water became popular 10 or 15 years ago, and meanwhile the soft drink manufacturers switched from aluminum cans to plastic bottles. So in effect we are all part of a vast experiment on this question, of what is the effect of taking estrogen on a male. Aside from the cancer question, Sax suggests that it’s causing young males to lose motivation (and enter puberty later).

Four other factors and the plastics additives are combining to foster a group of men and boys who are not growing up, Sax says. He cites a study that found that, 25 years ago, only 8 percent of men between the ages of 35 and 40 had not ever married. In 2006, in contrast, 22 percent were in that category, and the number was still rising. (NYT, 8/6/06, “Facing Middle Age with No Degree and No Wife” by O’Donnell and Porter)

Sax cited more studies. One showed that the fraction of men under 35 still living at home has doubled over the past 30 years. Another showed that 36 percent of all babies born in the U.S. in 2004 were born to unmarried women. The statistic holds true for all demographic groups.

Congress is somewhat aware of the threat to our children. It directed the Consumer Product Safety Commission to ban phthalates from children’s products as of August, 2009. This includes baby bottles and pacifiers.

However, the Food and Drug Administration controls food and drink and its containers. It has decided to believe 11 industry-funded studies showing that BPA is safe, in small amounts. But there are 104 independent studies that show it is a hazard, according to Catherine Zandonella, MPH, in the online magazine The Green Guide.

To be a savvy and safe consumer, look for a recycling number of 1, 3, or 7 on the bottoms of plastic bottles. If you see it, don’t use it. Especially, avoid beverages that were allowed to get warm in the plastic bottle, making it easier for the chemicals to seep out. (Acid in soda does this too.) Avoid warming food in plastic containers.

Sax identifies four other factors contributing to the epidemic of men who aren’t growing up:

* Requirements to sit still in kindergarten. Children these days are taught to read in kindergarten, at an age when most boys aren’t ready. So they begin to hate school.

* Video games

* Medications for ADHD

* No traditions for transition to manhood in our culture

The majority of people who think they have reached their predetermined height actually have the ability to grow up to two more inches. A great way to make this happen is to wear ankle weights.

Children have very soft, non-fused bones because they are in a period of rapid growth. This is caused by the large amounts of growth hormones that are in their system. A childs natural activity stretches their body and demands a height gain. Therefore, the body is triggered to become taller.

When you began to pass puberty your bones began to harden, or fuse. The closer you came to adulthood the more limited your growth became. However, if you can simulate the exercises that forced your body to grow in the first place you will be able to gain height. This can best be done when you use ankle weights.

Ankle weights help you maximize your workout and stretching to achieve your goals for growing taller. They strengthen and tone the muscles in your legs and lower torso. They increase the resistance as you stretch. Ankle weights stretch out the cartilage between your bones and vertebrae. Also, they help you to take advantage of the bone micro-fractures that happen during high impact activity.

High-impact exercises, like aerobics, can cause tiny breaks in the bones called micro-fractures. You do not notice these breaks and there is rarely ever any pain. This makes the bone longer and increases your height. Also, the greater resistance helps your muscles support this new bone growth. Ankle weights also stretch the cartilage between your joints and thicker cartilage leads to a taller you. However, make sure that you do not wear ankle weights during your aerobic exercises or you may cause injury.

There are several ankle weight techniques you can use to increase your height. There are exercises that must be planned to compliment your high-impact workouts and others must be done in conjunction with sleep. As an example, after you run you should attach a 5 to 10 pound weight on each ankle. Then sit on a chair with your lower legs hanging freely and still for at least 30 minutes. This helps your bones heal in this extended position. About one hour before you sleep you should also sit on a chair wearing ankle weights. This time, swing each leg, one at a time at increasing intervals. This prepares your bones to use the growth hormone in your system while you are sleeping. It also stretches your body in preparation for sleeping with tension. A great way to sleep with tension is to wear ankle weights and sleep with your lower legs hanging over the edge of the bed. This is a more efficient method because it focuses entirely on your lower legs.

If you want more variety in your routine, there are a few more active exercises that will also help you grow taller. For example, stand with your feet shoulder width apart while you are wearing ankle weights. Make sure your weight is on your heels and your toes are point outward. Then, shift your feet so that the weight of your body is on your toes and they point inward, but make sure you are not straining. Next, raise your foot backward and bend your toes forward and backward. Repeat this action with your opposite foot. Another exercise is to plant one foot in front of the other. Bend your knee and lunge right and left and then repeat with the other leg.

Pull-Ups and Kicking are other effective uses of ankle weights. A great way to do a pull-up is to alternate the position of your head from in front of the bar to behind the bar. Then, bring your legs up to chest and drop them suddenly. This makes the micro-fractures in your legs extend even further and heal in this position. If you prefer kicking then you should do at least 100 kicks daily and increase to 200 kicks within two weeks. You should always do your kicking in a very calm and controlled manner to maximize the benefits of ankle weights.

These ankle weight exercises all promote growth. You can use them to follow up a high-impact workout or to optimize the benefits of sleep. Wearing ankle weights makes the nutrition and exercise you give your body more effective and can make you gain height.

How Does Aging Affect Your Hair?

The changing colour of our hair is the most obvious sign of aging. As we get older our hair begins to produce less melanin, the same melanin that gives our skin its colour. This causes our hair to become grey. Grey hair can appear at any age. It’s not always a sign of aging, it’s caused by a reduction of pigment (grey hair) or a complete loss of pigment (white hair), and the reason it happens is not fully understood.

Aging also affects our hair in other ways. As we age our hair is prone to becoming drier, and so requires more moisture than ever before. Older hair also loses some of its elasticity and the texture changes. Some women will notice that their hair becomes thinner and lacks life, for others it appears dry and coarse. This happens because as we age, the size of the hair follicles diminish and hair growth slows. As a result there is not so much new growth to replace what we lose.

Sebum (oil produced naturally by our skin) diminishes as our body ages, and so our hair, therefore, loses its natural shine and smoothness. Plus, during the menopause our making of keratin slows. This protein fibre is vital to keeping our hair healthy and strong. For all you guys, there is the subject of going bald, thinning hair and coarse hair, especially the facial hair. Opt for the right type of hair colour to disguise your grey hair, but don’t go more than a couple of shades darker or lighter than your own hair colour.
