How To Fix A Dripping Tap
I am fond of reading books and I have read many books on plumbing just to get some idea on how to tackle small plumbing issues at home so that I can avoid calling a plumber each time and save my money.
One of the most common plumbing issue that we come across at home are the leaking taps. But, with a little time, patience and correct tools, it is possible for anyone to repair it without calling a plumber.
It is always advisable to take prompt actions when it comes to any plumbing issues. If left for a longer time, a leaking tap can leave stains on the sink/baths or can damage the tap entirely. Above all it leads to huge water wastage.
The most probable reason for a dripping tap is a damaged or a worn out washer. However, it can also be caused due to a damaged valve seating. If the drip is from a mixer nozzle, then change both tap washers.
If you notice a tap leaking at the faucet, then the most probable reason is a worn out or a damaged washer. You just need to replace the washer with a new one which is easily available in any plumbing supplies store.
For replacing the washer, you first need to turn off the main cork. Next, you should take a spanner and uncork the top of the tap. If you have finished removing it, remove the damaged or the broken washer and replace it with a new one. The replacement you will be using should be durable and with high quality. Now you can cover it again and you should tighten it with a spanner so that it will not leak again.
One should be very careful while using the plumbing equipments and should make sure that it does not damage the tap. So, it is a good idea to wrap the jaws of the wrench with plastic tape, or place a rag around the tap and use the wrench over the top. You can also place a towel into the bowl of the sink, to ensure any small objects do not manage to escape.
Taps which are now very much a fashion item come in different styles and colors. Not all taps are built to last, so check the quality if you are buying for the long term. Chromium-plated brass taps are the most durable. Check that the taps you are considering will fit the layout of holes in the basin for which they are intended. So, the secret to avoid leaking taps is to only install good quality taps.
Flat Panel TVs
One of the great things about the improvement of technology is the trickle down of advancements to things like home theaters. A great benefit in recent years has been the development of the flat screen TV. It has been very popular, which has led to further improvements and lower cost.
Reductions in price as tech has developed has increased the availability of flat screen TVs to a larger audience. Consumers can now get a real cinematic experience in their homes for a much lower price.
The big advantage to flat panel TVs is the manner in which one may be mounted onto the wall. The box-like conventional TVs were simply too large to make wall mounting work in a proper manner. Fortunately, the width of a flat panel TV makes wall mounting a much more viable and pleasant option.
Normally, plasma and flat screen televisions may be mounted on a flat surface of your abode. You will be able to arrange it in the ceiling whenever you need. Many consumers have their large flat screens based in their bedroom ceiling and then they can enjoy watching films though lying down. Bear in mind the proper way of mounting your TV, safety is very important; you would not desire an additional large TV falling down.
Now, sizes of flat screen TVs are larger. Only the count of acquirable wall mounts as well increase. With the present enhancements in engineering science, you will be able to give rise to a lot of composed thoughts with you flat screen.
With many wall mounts on the market for sale, it will be very comfortable to have your flat screen mounted on your wall safely. Only make the right determinations on your television size, weight, the wall mount size and capability. Call for assistance from the salespeople and look for information on the internet. Recognize what will work with your flat screen TV framework and the additional characteristics you require.
After you have chosen the type of wall mount that you want, you must choose between installing it yourself or paying someone else to mount the TV on the wall. It is not necessarily something that is easy; however, it is possible to do it yourself in an afternoon. If you don’t think you can do it, then perhaps you should not try yourself because you could end up damaging a rather expensive item.
You may prefer to look into hiring a professional installer especially if you do not have the installing instruments, and naturally the ability. Whenever you really would like to do the installation yourself, manage the needful enquiry and make sure that you already acknowledge everything prior to you start out assembling.
After your flat panel TV makes its way onto the wall, it will be a pleasing viewing experience for a long time. Don’t take short cuts in the installation process and, admit it to yourself if you can’t do it and hire a professional to get it right the first time.
Considering Plumbing As a Career Option?
The plumbing industry is a great one to step into if you feel you have the right attributes. This is mainly due to the fact that plumbers are always in high demand as they fulfil an essential role in society. People always call plumbers in emergencies when their boiler has stopped working, or some other system has become damaged. If you wish to be part of an industry that contributes to the better life of others, then this could be the right choice for you.
A person considering plumbing as a career choice needs to have particular attributes in order to succeed. For example, you should enjoy working with your hands, and not mind getting dirty. Plumbing is an industry that pays well and offers great long term prospects. You should also bear in mind, that unlike some other industry areas, there is little risk in some form of technology taking over the role of a plumber. A plumber plays an essential role in any house and is vital to ensuring the well being of our basic domestic needs.
Some of the tasks you will be doing as a plumber will involve some of the following:
repairing hot and cold water systems
fitting tanks and pipework
installing and maintaining gas, oil and solid fuel appliances
installing and repairing domestic appliances such as showers
What sort of qualities does a good plumber need?
You need to be prepared to get your hands dirty, and have the attitude of wanting to do the job right. An aptitude for math will be necessary as you will be dealing with numbers and you need to be good with using your hands. Of course as with any job there will be some drawbacks, as in plumbing you will need to be prepared to work in cramped conditions at times, and have the stamina to do physical work day after day. You will have to be a quick learner as you will be using tools and other forms of equipment on a daily basis. As well as having the essential physical skills, you will need to have good people skills too, as your profession requires you to be communicating with people on a regular basis. You will have to be respectful of other people’s properties and uphold good standards of work. All of this will lead to incredible job satisfaction and rewarding long-term prospects for your future career.
What qualifications do you need?
It is essential that you obtain the right skills in order to train as a plumber. Most follow the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) route or the (SNVQ in Scotland). This qualification entails both theory and practical work in the classroom/purpose built training facility and work based experience with a working plumber. Most of the colleges are known to help students find a work placement, however many students organise it themselves.
There are a range of programs out there for your offering, and it is up to you to decide which course will be most suited to you. You may simply wish to take a short plumbing course to learn some skills. On the other hand, you may be interested in making a long term career out of it, therefore a longer program would suit you more.
Do what resorts to your aptitude
You may think that it is really easy to find a job as per your aspirations and dreams. But in reality, it can prove to be very tough. It may happen that you would be required to switch a battery of jobs before you land up your dream job.
Quite often, we notice that everyone around us, including us grow up housing many aspirations in our minds as regards the position and reputation we see ourselves in, a few years down the line. Some times, it is more about a certain material luxury that you deeply wish to have, and at other times, it is about a certain job you wish to do.
Off late, Home Improvement has really picked up as a career choice. You know how it has been for so many years in the past- The tradition has always been to go in for intellect-stimulating jobs. As per perceptions, they enjoy greatest reputation and earning potential.
The twist seems good enough an option. Surely, such a move will open up new avenues for people who are not too inclined towards clerical jobs and in fact possess strong creativity.
It delights me to spill out that even the roofing units for houses are now coming at par with the competent architects. Considering that clients have now started going up to them directly has also led them to come in the limelight.
Even the creative bunch of home designers are said to be getting stormed with orders and more business. A string of customers have been lapping up to them to get their houses in tip-top shape. The fact that people have also started paying attention to their house works and style has certainly helped in bringing up this niche business segment.
This undoubtedly qualifies to being a piece of good news for the whole economy as such. As newer job avenues will open up, the chances of idle folk getting employed will get much stronger. This will definitely bring in a shower of good luck to the income potential of every country.
To end it up, I would like to optimally add that we have got a myriad of deserving professions that have it in them to create job and income potential in the society. What they just about need is a small befitting push towards initiative. Then they shall get rolling!
4 Steps To Calculating Your Home’s Solar Power Needs And Expenses
With green living becoming more and more important, many people are starting to install home solar power to supplement their power, and reduce their electric expenses.
But before you install a home solar power system, how many panel will you need in order to say reduce your utilities by half? And how much will you have to invest in the system?
Here is a four step process that you can follow to answer these two vital questions:
1 – How Much Power Do You Use Per Day?:
Your first step is to work out the average daily kilowatt hours (kWh) used. This can be done by looking back at your last twelve months power bills, and see how much power used per month, and get the monthly average. This will give you a better estimate of your average power needs by eliminating the effect of the seasons. It is calculated by adding up all 12 bills and dividing the total power used by 12. If you do not have the the past year’s bills, then look at your most recent one.
Now take your average monthly usage and divide it by 30 to work out your average daily power consumption
- Let’s use an example: If our monthly energy usage is 800kWh, then the average daily power used is: 800/30 = 26.7 kWh a day.
- So to reduce your electricity bill to half, 26.7/2 = 13.4 kWh of solar power per day is needed.
2 – Work Out Your Solar Panel Watt Requirements:
To work this out you are first going to look at an insolation map to see the average usable hours of sunlight your area receives each day. A map is available on our website.
Now take the average daily kWh calculation and divide that by the number of daily usable sunlight hours, then multiply that by 1.25 (to take into account the wasted energy from wiring, charge controllers. batteries, and inverters).
- Continuing from our example: Our solar panel watt needs equal:
13.4 kWh required / 5.5hrs of insolation x 1.25 = 3.045 kW or 3045 Watts daily.
This tells us that our solar panels must be capable of producing at least 3045 Watts of electricity.
3 – The Cost Of The Panels:
Next you need to work out how much it will cost to buy solar panels that produce at least 3045 Watts. Currently the highest average cost for solar panels in North America is $4.85 a Watt.
- Continuing with the same example, the cost of the solar panels will be 3045 x 4.85 = $14,768. This is only to reduce our power bill by 50%, and it is before the costs of charge controllers, inverters, batteries, and electricians.
4 – Offset Tax Credits And Rebates:
Before we jump the gun and think it will cost us at least $14,768 for 3045 Watts of solar panel watt power, we need to take tax incentives and rebates in account.
2009′s Federal renewable energy tax credits came into effect from the beginning of the year, and coupled with the state-side incentives in places like Connecticut, California, New York and New Jersey, the cost of the solar power system will be much less.
- Let’s use our example: If we were from California we would receive tax rebates of about 20% of the cost, and a federal tax credit of 40% on the remainder. So after rebates and credits, our solar panels would cost us:
$14,768 – $14,768 x (20%) – $14,768 x (1 – 20%) x 40% = $7,089.
Just remember that this formula is basic way for you to get an idea of what home solar power will cost you. Some things could not be factored in – such as the state or country you live in, the special offers of local solar companies and the cost of the other parts (inverters, charge controllers, batteries, installation fees).
However, from the example, you can see that for Californian to reduce their power bill by half, they would have to buy $14,768 worth of solar panels, costing them $7089 after rebates. A cheaper option would be to learn to source affordable and even free solar cells, and build your own solar panels. This can be done by following a relatively inexpensive step-by-step solar power manual, such as Earth4Energy.
Roof Mold Might Be Only One Of Many Issues With Your Home’s Look
Perhaps you’re trying to sell your house but the offers aren’t exactly pouring in. It’s easy to blame the poor housing market, and to some degree you’d be justified in doing so. But it’s also possible that your curb appeal isn’t quite up to par.
You’ve probably mowed and trimmed the yard. It’s also likely that you’ve planted a few flowers and put down fresh mulch. But there are several other things you can do that may not have occurred to you.
First and foremost, you should have a professional clean the black roof mold from your shingles. More accurately called roof algae, these stains can often be so bad that they prevent a potential buyer from even getting out of their car. No matter how beautiful the rest of your home’s exterior, a stain-covered roof can completely ruin your curb appeal.
Speaking of cleaning, have you taken the time to clean the siding and windows? When I’m walking up to someone’s front door as a potential homebuyer the last thing I want to see is mildew-covered siding or dirty windows. Any time spent cleaning these surfaces is surely time well spent.
Pressure washing your driveway and walkways is another easy way to clean up your home’s appearance. Most people don’t realize how dirty their concrete areas are. A good pressure cleaning, though, can make a huge difference in brightening it up.
Trimming the trees in the front yard is often a wise move. Many people have a special affection for the trees in their yard, but this shouldn’t be justification to let them grow wild. Any low-hanging branches must be trimmed so that the whole front of the house is viewable from the street.
Finally, consider the possibility of altering your shudders’ color or replacing them entirely. I’ve seen many otherwise attractive homes that had their curb appeal destroyed by shudders that were weird tones of green, violet, or red. The color of your shudders should mesh with the rest of the home, not clash with it.
By implementing these simple changes in your home’s appearance you could quickly see much greater interest in your home. Keep in mind that potential buyers are looking for something clean and inviting when they pull up to a house. If something negative draws their attention they may shun your home before even stepping foot inside.
Debunking Tile and Grout Myths
The recession goes on, taking its toll on the normal American citizen; and to go with the economic changes, people are always on the lookout for ways to have a simple, low maintenance lifestyle. The general opinion is that homeowners are starting to look into tiles as flooring for homes. Tile has become the choice for many, especially in states that enjoy a mild climate. But, there are a few negative perceptions about tiles that need to be addressed. Be well-informed before pushing aside the idea of using tiles on your floor. Here are some of the common myths debunked:
1. Getting tiles is expensive. In truth, there are actually a wide variety of prices for tiles, ranging from about a dollar to $25 per square foot. But picture this; tile can last a lifetime, so it will be more cost-efficient in the end when compared to carpeting.
2. Tile designs aren’t inspired. Yes, there are tile designs that are plain as plain can be. But if you have an artistic eye, you’ll be able to contrive a tile design that will be a very exciting mix of color and shapes. Or you could tone it down to an understated, but very tasteful design. If you’re not sure, better get a designer in.
3. Tiled floor requires high maintenance. This is pure rubbish; and in fact, the opposite true. Wooden flooring can be warped by water or damaged by scratches, whereas tile is tough and durable.
4. Tile very easily gets dirty. While time to time you will be required to call in for professional maintenance from grout cleaners, you won’t need to do it as often as you think. Tiles will stay clean longer, when you compare it to other types of flooring. For people who suffer from allergies, asthma or lung-related conditions, this is the best choice for them.
5. Tile is fragile. It will be fragile only if it was not installed properly. Carefully placed, it will hold and resist even falling objects; in fact, tiles that date back to the Roman Empire survive mostly intact.
6. Grout and tiles are back-breaking to clean. This is a myth, as you can get in professional grout cleaners to handle it for you. Grout will accumulate mold if you choose to ignore the cleaning, and may pose a health hazard, but it doesn’t mean you can’t do the job yourself.

What You Must Know about Carbon Monoxide
If you use gas, wood, oil, or coal as fuel for your home, you and your family may be at risk for carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Carbon monoxide is extremely difficult to detect because it is colourless and has no smell or taste. Although carbon-based fuels are safe to use under proper conditions, these fuels become quite dangerous when they do not burn completely and emit CO into the air.
Carbon monoxide affects the haemoglobin in the bodys blood stream. Oxygen is transported through the body by haemoglobin, which is part of the red blood cells. The red blood cells fail to carry oxygen to the bodys cells, tissues and organs when carbon monoxide is mixed with the haemoglobin. The lack of oxygen causes the cells, tissues and organs to die slowly. Prolonged exposure to even minimal amounts of CO can result in paralysis, brain damage, and death.
The first effects of carbon monoxide may be dismissed as the onset of a common illness. The headaches, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness and stomach pains that accompany CO poisoning may be passed off as the effects of food poisoning, a virus, the flu, or exhaustion. Carbon monoxide poisoning can also produce pains in the chest, breathlessness, erratic behaviour, and visual problems.
Two of the most prevalent causes of CO poisoning in the home are flues and gas appliances. According to the HSE (Health and Safety Executive), an average of twenty people in the UK die every year from carbon monoxide poisoning. Most home CO poisoning cases are the result of gas applicances or flues that are not installed correctly or are not maintained as instructed. There is a higher risk of carbon monoxide poisoning if there is not plenty of fresh air circulating throughout the home.
Educating yourself about carbon monoxide poisoning is the first step in protecting your family. Even if you take all the necessary precautions, you are at risk for CO poisoning if there is a carbon-based fuel appliance in your home. Share the information about carbon monoxide poisoning with family members so that everyone is aware of the dangers and symptoms. One good preventive measure is to install a carbon monoxide alarm. Compliance with British Standard EN 50291 and a British or European approval mark are two criteria to look for when you purchase a CO alarm. Choose an audible carbon monoxide alarm so that your family can be alerted to the presence CO even during their sleeping hours.
A CORGI-registered professional should install any gas appliance or flue in your home. You can trust an installer with CORGI credentials to install appliances and flues properly and safely. Make an appointment with your CORGI-registered installer for a preventive maintenance check every year to ensure your appliances are operating as they should be and to make any necessary repairs needed to keep your family safe from carbon monoxide. Hire a qualified chimney sweep to clear out flues every year.
